The very thing that gives a city its spirit is also the soul its people lend to that city. Istanbul has found its true identity with the magnificent monumental structures built on top of its magnificent natural beauty since 1453. The builder of this new and unchangeable identity is the Great Conqueror Sultan Fatih, who was describes as “the Sultan Mehmed Han that made Istanbul” by the historian Neşri. In a story that began with him, Istanbul became the symbol city that was desired and dreamed of in “seven climates and four continents”. Whenever you feel the need tor inspiration, courage and awareness of renewal that Istanbul will give you, Yahya Kemal’s lines will be guiding you: I looked at you from a hill yesterday, dear Istanbul! I haven't set eyes on any place that I did not visit and endeavour, As long as I live, you will sit on the throne of my heart Even to love a plain neighbourhood of yours is worth a lifetime” Thus, that one look you take from a hill ot Istanbul not only offers you a magnificent view, but also reshapes your vision and identity in company with the Istanbul silhouette. From Sarayburnu to the Galata Tower, every piece of art you see turns into a constant and unchanging guide: On the one hand, Fatih’s relic The Grand Hagia Sophia... In front of it stands its most permanent companion, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, which contains the most beautiful shades of blue... Nuruosmaniye and Beyazıt mosques with all their elegance just ahead... Suleymaniye, the immortal work of the Great Sinan, and the Şehzade, Fatih and Yavuz Sultan Selim mosques greeting it from the front... |

Her kubbe. Levent Deniz’i tebrik ederken emeği geçenlere de teşekkürlerimi sunuyorum. Saygılarımla. |
Of course, it is these mosques that give Istanbul its soul, and their unique domes that symbolize the enthusiasm of love. Each dome is a symbol of our constructive nature as well as our conquering nature, as Necip Fazil expresses in the verse “The army that stands in front of the shining domes”. The historical mosques of Istanbul are a significant part of the civilizational march of the Turks. In the true sense of the word, these structures are masterpieces with their architecture, magnificent calligraphy and tile art, pen work, marble and wood carving. As ICOC, it is our main duty to keep these masterpieces alive. With this album book, which conveys the unique legacy of our ancestors who made Istanbul “the gate of happiness”, we shine a light not only on our past but also on our future from 2023. By photographing the domes, where the earth meets the sky, we convey to our readers the message that two worlds become “one” with the language of art. We are opening a new and sophisticated “door of happiness” from the domes into the great city Istanbul. While passing from dome to dome, we travel from century to century and witness the change and the development in the history of art. I congratulate Ş. Levent Deniz, who gave life to this work through his lens, and would like to thank those who contributed to this book, which we represent to our readers in Turkish and English. Cordially. |

Hundreds of domes rising above Istanbul, the capital of the throne for four hundred and seventy years, surround the entire city with a spiritual atmosphere, while the minarets that rise in the sky remind us of the sign of martyrdom, as the great poet Necip Fazıl once said. The unique and spectacular structures of art in our mosques are a gift from our ancestors for the future generations. Our mosques, which have a very special place in our lives as places of worship, are also unique cultural treasures and works of art. I would like to begin by stating that I feel incredibly proud to be the photographer of this book, which we have prepared to contribute to the visual promotion of the artistic features of our mosques. It was a tiring but a very fulfilling job indeed. It was a pleasure for me to experience that magical moment which was filled with admiration before taking a photo. Photographing and immortalizing these unique works and turning them into books tills one's heart with enthusiasm. Therefore I am pleased and proud. Especially the tact that the book was published by the well-established Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, which is one of the most important non-governmental organizations in Turkey, has been a special honour of mine. First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to our chairman, **ki*Avda*iç, and our Board of Directors, members of Research and Editorial Board for their continuous support in giving me this opportunity. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to dear Mehmet Nuri Görenoğlu, who introduced me to the valuable employees of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, to Yaşar Erdem, one of the imams of the Ayancık Denizciler Mosque who helped me a lot with the translation of calligraphy works in mosques, to Esen Ataman Kürklü, with whom I worked very harmoniously while preparing the design of the book. While many valuable historical buildings no longer remained in time since the past to the present, our mosques have managed to survive in defiance of time and natural events. The reason behind this is the architects and masters of our mosques who had done magnificent work, as well as the fact that the following generations gave the mosques the value they deserve by successfully preserving them. All of our mosques are very important in terms of showing not only the achievements of our ancestors in the field of architecture, but also the enormous level reached in Islamic arts, which is an integral part of our culture. The calligraphy, interior decorations, embroideries, epitaphs, marble and woodwork, pen works and tiles used in the mihrab, pulpit and dome show the most perfect examples of their art. Each of them is of great artistic, cultural and historical importance. Our book has been prepared in order to better introduce this great civilization founded by our ancestors, to future generations. |

My primary goal in this book was to unite the art in mosques with the art of photography. The domes, which are mainly among the mosques, have the quality of an art feast; I tried to portray the mosque domes from the minarets and show how the minarets surround Istanbul with an embrace. While introducing different perspectives to the reader, I also tried to inform them with the brief introduction articles I prepared. While writing the introductory articles for the mosque, besides the well-known and valuable sources, I also benefited from lesser-known significant sources, master’s and doctoral dissertations while using Ottoman archives, and overall I tried to reach the right information in this manner. Especially Prof. Dr. Gülru Necipoğlu’s work titled The Age of Sinan was very enlightening in terms of accessing historical information. The bibliography I put at the end of our book will be a guide for those who want to further study on this subject. I took more than 20,000 photos. Selecting the right photographs for the book was the hardest part. I regretted that I could not include all the photographs in the book and had to leave out some of them, but the physical limits of the book left me with no choice. We have included fifty precious mosques in this book. Among them, along with the great and magnificent mosques that everyone knows, there were some mosques that are not very well known however I wanted to include them in the book so that they can be recognized by a wide audience due to some of their excellent features. In addition, we have included in our book not only the mosques of the Ottoman period, but also some mosques that were built especially in the later years of the Republic period, which stand out due to their architectural and artistic features. They always ask me “Which mosque impressed you the most?”. Each of them had a different beauty, it is very difficult to select one over others. For this reason, I found it appropriate to include mosques in alphabetical order in the book. How can you favour Hagia Sophia, Suleymaniye, Fatih, Rustem Pasha, Camlica over each other? It is very difficult. To those who insisted with the question, I said I was very impressed by the Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque, even though it is a small mosque. I still remember my encounter with the imam of the mosque in which I kept saying “How can one place hold such beauty?” and he would smile back to me each time I said it. Although the Yıldız Hamidiye, Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan and Rüstem Paşa mosques are physically smaller than many of our mosques, I must admit that I was under the influence of their spiritual atmosphere and the feast of art they held. First you slowly turn around 360 degrees where you are. You feel a sense of peace, this air first reflects on your face without realizing it, you smile involuntarily, then you realize this environment which has fascinated you... I can stay in these places for days and photograph every square centimetre. Such beauty, such peace of mind, calm ... Greetings to the architects, craftsmen, masters, workers, the builders of mosques and our great ancestors who gave these beauties to our world, may the Almighty grant them peace! The following lines in the poem “My Dear Istanbul” by the great poet Necip Fazıl Kısakürek affected us deeply while naming our book: "Domes of diamonds, maybe a million carats... The minaret in the sky is the witness of our belief, The one truth in each embroidery, There is death, and no other path..." What shall we say? Maybe the essence of the truth is as Bâkî said, “There is a pleasant voice in this dome that remains”... |
Altunîzâde Camii
(ALTUNÎZÂDE İSMAİL ZÜHDÜ PAŞA CAMİİ)
|
Altunizade Mosque is located in Altunizade neighbourhood of Üsküdar district. The neighbourhood is named after the mosque. The mosque was built by the statesman Ismail Zühdü Pasha in 1865 as a complex during Sultan Abdulaziz and Sultan Abdulmecid periods. İsmail Zuhdu Pasha was appointed as the responsible body of the construction of Dolmabahçe Palace. He acted as a member of the military council then was promoted to the pasha rank. The complex had a mosque, a primary school, a junior middle school, a bath, shops, a bakery, and a fountain. The structure is a single-domed mosque. The dome, built of wood, is covered with lead. It is seated on four immense pillars called the elephant feet, and there are four partially buried pillars in the structure. There are twelve large windows in the upper row below the dome; and on the lower side, you see eight large windows. This structure helps the mosque receive plenty of light. The four walls and the dome of the mosque are decorated with pen works. Baroque and Empiric style motifs were used in the decorations. The dome surface is decorated with eight light and eight dark coloured lines. In the centre of the dome, the 41st verse of the surah Fatir of the Quran is engraved on a blue background: “It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth, lest they cease (to function) and if they should fail, there is none - not one - can sustain them thereafter. Verily He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.” The calligrapher Mehmed Rasim Efendi wrote the names of the four caliphs and the inscriptions on the mihrab1 and the minbar2 of the mosque. On the walls hang four plates written between 1887-1893 by the Calligrapher Sami in ta’lik style and a plate written by Calligrapher Abdülfettah Efendi in thuluth style. The pulpit, the niche and the preaching platform are made of marble and decorated with baroque fretwork. The stone gate of the pulpit by the shoe rack of the mosque came from Bayraktar Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Egriboz Castle after the forementioned mosque was converted into a church by the Greeks. It was brought to Istanbul and was placed here in Altunizade mosque. The grave of Altunizade Ismail Zühdü Pasha is in a protected place in the front direction of the niche of the mosque. The mosque has a single minaret with a single minaret balcony. |

Arap Camii
|
Arap Camiine, Sultan III. Mehmed 1603 yılında; Sultan I. Mahmud’un validesi Saliha Sultan 1734 yılında; Sultan II. Mahmud’un kerimesi Adile Sultan ve eşi 1868 yılında tadilatlar ve eklemeler yaptırmıştır. 1913-1919 yılları arasında Giritli Hasan Bey’in yaptırdığı onarımlarda cami büyük değişikliklere uğramıştır. |
The Arap Mosque is located on Perşembe Bazaar Street in Karaköy, in Beyoğlu district. It is known that a church was built in the place where the Arab Mosque is located today, during the Latin domination in Istanbul between 1204-1261. Some historical records show that this church, built by the Catholics, was called San Paolo. It is known that this church was transferred to the Dominican order in the early 1300s. Then a large monastery and a new church were built in the name of San Paolo and San Domenico on the location of this church. According to the traditions of the conquest, the largest churches of the conquered cities would be converted into mosques. It is thought that this church was converted into a mosque around 1475 through the Fatih Sultan Mehmed Foundation. It is believed that the Mesa Domenko Church, recorded as the “Galata Mosque” in the Fatih foundation charters, was indeed the Arab Mosque. Since the Andalusian Arabs, who migrated to the Ottoman lands from Spain at the end of the 15th century, were settled in the area where the mosque is located, this place took its current name “The Arab Mosque”, and thus happened the misconception that the mosque was founded by the Arabs before the conquest of Istanbul. There were renovations and additions made to the Arab Mosque by Sultan Mehmed III in 1603; and by Saliha Sultan, the mother of Sultan Mahmud I, in 1734; then by Sultan Mahmud II’s sister Adile Sultan and her husband in 1868. The mosque underwent a major transformation during the repairs made by Hasan Bey of Crete between 1913 and 1919. The roof was rebuilt, and the mosque was expanded. The wooden ornamented ceiling, which extends along three walls resting on twenty-two wooden pillars, the baroque style raised platform sitting on eight marble pillars and the two-way wooden staircase leading to the platform were added during these repairs. It stands out with its beauty among the mosques that have wooden interior. Seventy windows in three rows illuminate the mosque. The extraordinary square-shaped minaret of the mosque, converted from the bell tower of the church, with its one hundred and two stairs and its pointed cone immediately catches the eye. |

Ataşehir Mimar Sinan Camii, Anadolu yakasının son yıllarda gelişen ilçelerinden biri olan Ataşehir ilçesindeki Barbaros Mahallesinde yer almaktadır.
Batı Ataşehir Camii ve Hizmet Birimleri Yaptırma ve Yaşatma Derneğinin, Mimar Sinan anısına yaptırdığı caminin projesi Mimar Hilmi Şenalp'a aittir.
Mimarın eserleri arasında İstanbul İslam Bilim ve Teknoloji Tarihi Müzesi, Amerika Diyanet Merkezi projesi, Marmara Üniversitesi İlahiyat Fakültesi Camii ve Kültür Merkezi, Aşkabad Ertuğrul Gazi Camii, Berlin Şehitlik Camii ve Tokyo Camii yer almaktadır. Yapı Osmanlı - Türk mimarî üslûbunda tasarlanmış ve 2012 yılında hizmet vermeye başlamıştır.
Caminin dış duvarındaki kitâbe, camiye neden “Mimar Sinan” isminin verildiğini anlatmaktadır. “Temmuz 2012 / Ramazan 1433” tarihini taşıyan yazıda dönemin Başbakanı Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Mimar Sinan’a şöyle seslenmektedir:
Ataşehir Mimar Sinan Mosque is located in Barbaros Neighborhood of Ataşehir district, one of the developing areas of the Anatolian Side of Istanbul in recent years.
The project of the mosque, which was commissioned in memory of Mimar Sinan by the West Ataşehir Mosque and the Foundation of Construction and Sustenance of Service Units, belongs to Architect Hilmi Şenalp. Among the works of the architect are Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam, Diyanet Center of America project, Marmara University Faculty of Theology Mosque and Cultural Center, the Ashgabat Ertuğrul Gazi Mosque, Berlin Martyrdom Mosque and Tokyo Mosque. The structure was designed in Ottoman - Turkish architectural style and began to host its visitors in 2012.
The epitaph on the outer wall of the mosque explains why the mosque was named “Mimar Sinan”. In the article dated “July 2012 / Ramadan 1433”, then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addresses Mimar Sinan in such words:
“Sinan, who wrote poems out of stones and earth in all corners of the Ottoman geography... If you were a poet, then Selimiye would be the faith in the one, Suleymaniye would become the plea to the one and Şehzade Mosque would turn into the praise of the one. These bridges, soup kitchens, tombs, and fountains lined up would remain as the verses of your great poetry Each of your 84 mosques, 52 masjids, 57 madrasahs, 22 tombs, 7 Quran schools, 17 soup kitchens, 3 hospitals, 5 water channels and aqueducts, 8 bridges, 20 caravanserais, 36 palaces, 48 baths, 8 cellars are as beautiful as poetry... 365 artifacts remaining in the sky dome from a lifetime of 92 years... Master Sinan! If you had not built it, our sense of aesthetics would have remained imperfect. If you had not done it, our muralists, illustrators, calligraphers, and artists would not be as skilled...
Sinan Usta!

Oh Master Sinan! You, who have shown the glorious face of a nation and civilization to the world with your works, have imprinted on our history. Words are not enough to show our gratitude to you. As a token of our gratitude and appreciation, we can only name these works we have done after you.
This name is gifted to you from all your grandchildren, from the benefactors to the chairmen of associations, from the contractors to the workers, from the architects to the illustrators, from the imams to the congregations, so that they can show you their respect and affection in the presence of all your grandchildren.
So that you know we love you dearly...
Be a saint like the water flowing from the fountains that you have embroidered on this land...”

İstanbul’un fethiyle yeni bir çağ açan büyük Osmanlı Sultanı Fâtih Sultan Mehmed Han’ın gelecek nesillere emaneti Ayasofya-i Kebîr Câmi-i Şerîfi, Fâtih ilçesinde Sultanahmet Meydanında bulunmaktadır.
The Grand Hagia Sophia Mosque, listed as the is the legacy of the great Ottoman Sultan Fatih Sultan Mehmed Han who opened a new era with the conquest of Istanbul for future generations. It is located in Sultanahmet Square of Fatih district.
This structure, which is admired by everyone, is a “UNESCO World Cultural Heritage” built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The structure, which was built by Architect Anthemios and Architect Isidoros between 532-537, was named Hagia Sophia, which means sacred wisdom. Hagia Sophia, which still stands strong today, is one of the most important monuments in the history of world architecture.
Hagia Sophia was built as an “Imperial Church” in the Eastern Roman period and has been destroyed under many conditions such as war, natural disaster and rebellion throughout the history. It took one of the biggest damages when the city was invaded during the 4th Crusade. In 1204, the Crusaders plundered the entire city and Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia was used as a cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church during the Latin occupation, which lasted from this date to 1261.
With the conquest of Istanbul in 1453 by the Great Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed the Conqueror, Hagia Sophia, the largest church in the city, was converted into a mosque following the tradition of conquest. From this date until today, the structure was deemed of high importance. Maintenance and renovation activities have resumed diligently, and the work has been given a much stronger structure than when it was built.
Sultan Selim II was one of the Ottoman sultans who paid the most attention to Hagia Sophia. As a result of the signs of decay that the structure showed over the years, Sultan Selim II commissioned the great master Mimar Sinan for the maintenance and renovation of Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia, whose domes and walls collapsed many times before it was converted into a mosque, remained intact despite many major earthquakes that occurred in Istanbul after the arrangements made by Mimar Sinan. The most important work of Mimar Sinan to prevent the destruction of the structure was to add strong buttresses to Hagia Sophia. Thanks to these buttresses placed around it, the walls of Hagia Sophia were prevented from flexing and collapsing. Sinan placed these buttresses so beautifully that when viewed from the outside, they appear as an already standing part of Hagia Sophia. The tomb, which was built by Mimar Sinan for Sultan Selim II in the protected burial area of Hagia Sophia, was the first of the sultan’s tombs built around the monument. In other tombs, there are approximately one hundred and fifty graves of dynasty members including the graves of Sultan Murad III, Sultan Mehmed III, Sultan Mustafa I and Sultan Ibrahim.
In time Hagia Sophia became a complete complex with the addition of minarets, the niche, the pulpit, the imam’s lectern, the sultan’s platform, the fountain, the madrasah, the library, the soup kitchen, and the primary school. The interior decorations of the work were also carefully designed during the period of Ottoman rule. The mosque is decorated with the most outstanding examples of traditional Turkish and Islamic art. The most elegant examples of tiling and calligraphy made the temple even more beautiful. During the extensive repairs
Yine Kazasker İzzet Efendinin elinden çıkan, her biri 7,5 metre çapında ve 35 santimetre boyutunda harf kalınlığına sahip, günümüzde halen camiyi süsleyen sekiz adet hat levhası caminin ana duvarlarına yerleştirilmiştir.
Günümüzde camide yer alan minber Sultan III. Murad döneminde yaptırılmıştır ve dönemin mermer işçiliğinin nadide örneklerinden biridir. Caminin mihrâbının iki yanında yer alan şamdanlar ise Kanûnî Sultan Süleyman döneminde gerçekleştirilen Macaristan seferinden yadigârdır. Budin’in fethi sırasında Macar Kralı I. Matyas’ın saray kilisesinden getirilmişlerdir.
Bunun ardından Cumhurbaşkanı Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’ın imzası ile yayımlanan 2729 sayılı Cumhurbaşkanlığı Kararnamesiyle Ayasofya-i Kebîr Câmi-i Şerîfi, 24 Temmuz 2020 tarihinde kılınan cuma namazıyla yeniden ibadete açılmıştır.
made by the architect Fossati during the reign of Sultan Abdulmecid, Tosyalı Kazasker Izzet Efendi engraved the 35th verse of the Surah Nur in the centre of the dome: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon light. Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things." Eight calligraphy plates, each with 7.5 meters in diameter and 35 centimeters in letter thickness, decorated by the forementioned Kazasker Izzet Efendi, were placed on the main walls of the mosque. The plates with the calligraphy “Allah (C.C.)”, “Muhammad (Peace be upon him)”, and the names of the first four caliphs, “Abu Bakr (R.A.)”, “Omar (R.A.)”, “Osman (R.A.)”, “Ali (R.A.)” along with the names of the grandchildren of the Prophet “Hassan (R.A.)” and “Hussain (R.A.)” are artistically unique works.
The most impressive aspect of the work is the magnificent dome that hangs in the air and covers the entire structure as anyone who visits the structure will agree. It is seen that the dome with a diameter of 32.6 meters and a height of 55.6 meters from the ground consists of forty branches and forty huge windows.
Inside the structure, there are a total of one hundred and seven pillars, forty on the lower floor and sixtyseven on the upper floor. The tallest of these pillars are almost 20 meters high, with a radius of 1.5 meters. Their estimated weight is considered to be 70 tons. It is known that most of the magnificent pillars used in the construction of the structure are older than the building. These pillars were brought to Hagia Sophia from different temples in Anatolia, which was a common tradition of architecture in the ancient times. The massive doors of Hagia Sophia are made of oak and hold the traces of the Byzantine period. The bronze door in the structure was specially brought to Hagia Sophia from a Hellenistic temple in Tarsus.
The pulpit in the mosque today was built during the time of Sultan Murad III and is one of the rare examples of marble workmanship of the era. The candlesticks on both sides of the mosque’s niche are heirlooms from the Hungarian expedition which was carried out during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. They were brought from the palace church of the Hungarian King Matyas I during the conquest of Budin.
The minaret, located in the southeast of the mosque, was built during the period of either Sultan Mehmed II or Bayezid IL The minaret on the side of Topkapi Palace is considered to be built by the great architect Mimar Sinan during the Sultan Selim II period due to its similarity with the minarets of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne. The other minarets in the southwest and northwest directions were built by Mimar Sinan during the reign of Sultan Murad III. During the renovations made in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries, decorations were added to the minarets according to the style that was accepted in the period.
Hagia Sophia, which was converted into a mosque with the conquest of Istanbul and opened for worship as a mosque for the duration of 481 years, was closed to the public with the start of its restoration work in the 1930s. After this restoration work, the structure was converted into a museum with the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 24 November 1934. The Council of State canceled the forementioned Council of Ministers decision on 10 July 2020. Then, with the Presidential Decree Number 2729 published with the signature of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the Grand Hagia Sophia Mosque was opened for worship again with the Friday prayer on July 24, 2020.
The Presidency of the Republic of Turkey Directorate of Communications stated that “Turkey will show maximum sensitivity to the outstanding universal values, originality and integrity of Hagia Sophia, which will continue its existence as the common heritage of humanity, as it has done so far, and will protect the Hagia Sophia Mosque and transfer it to future generations within the framework of both international conventions and domestic law."

Orta kubbede on altı adet pencere yer almaktadır.
Ayazma Mosque is one of the historical mosques of Üsküdar district. It is located on a hill overlooking the Bosphorus between Salacak and Şemsipaşa districts.
The mosque was built in 1761 by Sultan Mustafa III in the name of his mother Mihrişah Emine Sultan, and his older brother Şehzade Süleyman who died in the same year in 1732. The architect of the mosque is Mehmed Tahir Ağa.
The mosque consists of a single dome seated on four arches. In the center of the dome, the 41st verse of the chapter of Fatir is engraved: “It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth, lest they cease (to function): and if they should fail, there is none - not one - can sustain them thereafter: Verily He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.” There are sixteen windows in the middle dome. There are weight towers designed in an extremely elegant way in each
corner of the mosque.
One of the most important features that makes this historical mosque famous is the “birdhouses”, which are described as miniatures of the Turkish mansion and placed on the small console protrusions on the walls of the mosque. This book certainly had to include these beautiful examples of the elegance and the grace of our ancestors.
The mosque has a single minaret with a single minaret balcony.

Beyazıt Camii, Fatih ilçesinde Beyazıt Meydanında bulunmaktadır.
Sultan II. Bayezid tarafından 1505 yılında Mimar Yakup Şah bin Sultan Şah'a yaptırılmıştır.
âyeti işlenmiştir: “Bir gece, kendisine bazı âyetlerimizi gösterelim diye kulunu Mescid-i Harâm’dan çevresini mübarek kıldığımız

In addition to the mosque, there were a madrasah, a primary school, a soup kitchen, a caravanserai, baths and tombs in the complex.
Beyazıt Mosque, which is the “oldest Selatin mosque that has preserved its originality” in Istanbul, is one of the last examples of early Ottoman Classical architecture.
The dome of the mosque is 16.78 meters in diameter. The dome is carried by four massive pillars and two red columns. The main dome is supported by the niche and two half-domes in the opposite direction. In the center of the main dome, the 1st verse of the Isra Surah is engraved: “Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless, in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth (all things)."
The stonework of the mosques niche and pulpit, which is embroidered like lace, is extremely magnificent. The stonework of the raised platform for the call of prayer, and the platform for the womens section which stands on the consoles is also eye-catching.
The marble-paved courtyard of the mosque is square in shape and has three entrance doors. The porticoes with twenty pillars and twenty-four domes around the fountain surround the courtyard.
Sultan Bayezid II is buried in the tomb near the qibla direction.
The mosque has two minarets with a single minaret balcony, located quite far from each other (79 meters).

dereceleri yükselten, ey istenenleri veren, dilekleri yerine getiren, ey bütün sesleri işiten,
her nidayı duyan.
Kubbe kasnağında Yesârîzâde’nin celî sülüsle yazdığı “esmâ-i hüsnâ” vardır. 1945 yılındaki tamirde Hattat Halim bu hattı yenilemiştir.
Yapının içi elli beş adet pencere ile aydınlatılmıştır.
Caminin tek şerefeli iki minâresi vardır.

Dolmabahçe Camii olarak da bilinen Bezmiâlem Valide Sultan Camii, Beyoğlu ilçesinde Dolmabahçe Sarayının bitişiğinde yer almaktadır. Camiyi Sultan Abdülmecid’in validesi ve II. |
Bezmialem Valide Sultan Mosque, in its other name Dolmabahçe Mosque, is located next to Dolmabahçe Palace in Beyoğlu district. The mosque was built by Architect Garabet Balyan in 1853 with the request of Bezmialem Valide Sultan who is the mother of Sultan Abdulmecid and the wife of Sultan Mahmud II. The work consists of two parts, the mosque and the sultans pavilion. The mosque, in which baroque and imperial styles can be observed together, has a single dome. There are arch windows in harmony with the arches on all four walls of the mosque. The carrier arches on the four facades are placed upon the pillars at the four corners which surpass the structure of the mosque. There are weight towers placed on these pillars outside. When viewed from the Bosphorus, the mosque has a stature like a small palace. Square partitions starting from small to large in the center of the dome give a feeling of depth to the space. The architecture resembles the style of European churches of the imperial baroque era. The interior of the dome and pendentives decorated with pen works are very impressive. All the decorations are in Western style. The niche and the pulpit are partially embellished with Baroque decorations. The colorful marble workmanship is eye-catching. The work has two elegant minarets with a single minaret balcony. |

The Grand Mecidiye Mosque, also known as Ortaköy Mosque, is on the Ortaköy coast of Besiktas district. This impressive structure was built by Nikogos Balyan with the request of Sultan Abdulmecid in 1854. The mosque was built in baroque style and is a work of art in itself. The Grand Mecidiye Mosque is one of the magnificent and valuable architectural works of the Bosphorus beyond doubt. Celal Esat Arseven, who has publications in the field of history of art and architecture, has a very nice expression for the Grand Mecidiye Mosque; “This mosque, which is located at the most eye-catching point of Istanbul standing at the entrance of the Bosphorus from Marmara embellishing the coast, resembles a “mashallah” that was placed there so that the Bosphorus would be protected from the evil eye.” The work consists of the mosque and the sultans pavilion in front of the entrance, similar to the other Selatin mosques built in the 19 century. The western part of the second floor, which can be reached by an ostentatious staircase, was designed as a sultan’s chamber. The pen works which leave no untouched space in the mosque are extremely complex and colorful. The pattern on its 13.9-meter diameter dome is also adorned with lines that give the dome a sense of depth. Another important feature of the mosque is the lines that adorn its walls and pulpit. The statement of tawhid and the calligraphy frames on the wall and the pulpit were written by Sultan Abdulmecid. The mosque is illuminated by eight long and oval windows in the lower row and twelve in the upper row. The exterior of the mosque is also quite striking. The stonework and fretwork decorations in baroque and rococo style are very magnificent. It has two extremely elegant minarets with one minaret balcony each. There are acanthus leaves under the minaret balconies which are painted with gold gilding. |

Cihangir Camii, Beyoğlu ilçesinde Cihangir semtinde bulunmaktadır. Eser, büyük Osmanlı Padişahı Kanûnî Sultan Süleyman’ın erken yaşta vefat eden oğlu Şehzade Cihangir adına Mimar Sinan’a 1560 yılında inşa ettirilmiştir. Şehzade Cihangir’in türbesi bu cami içerisinde yer almaz, abisi Şehzade Mehmed’in türbesi ile birlikte Şehzade Camii bahçesinde bulunmaktadır. Caminin tek şerefeli iki minâresi vardır. |

Kubbenin iç yüzeyinde yer alan Allah’ın (C.C.) isimlerinden on altısı, tarihteki on altı Türk devletine ithafen Haşr sûresinin son iki âyeti ile birlikte yazılmıştır. |
Çamlıca Mosque is located on Çamlıca Hill, at an altitude of 286, in Üsküdar district. Hayriye Gülotu and Bahar Mızrak prepared the architectural project of the mosque, which was built by the Foundation of Mosque and Educational Cultural Services of Istanbul. The first prayer in the mosque was held on March 7, 2019, which coincides with Islam’s blessed Night of Wishes. The official opening of the work was held on May 3, 2019 with a ceremony attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The mosque has become one of the new symbols of the city, taking its place in the silhouette of the Anatolian side of Istanbul as the largest and most magnificent mosque of the Republican period. The complex consists of the mosque, the Museum of Islamic Arts, conference halls, a library, an art gallery and eight art workshops. It is seen that the mosque also has different symbolic features. For example, the seventy-two-meter-high main dome of the work represents the seventy-two nations that are considered have lived in Istanbul. The dome with a diameter of thirty-four meters symbolizes Istanbul. The rising crescent placed on the main dome of the mosque is also remarkable. This crescent, which is the largest in the world, has a width of 3 meters 12 centimeters, a height of 7 meters 77 centimeters and a weight of 4.5 tons. Next to the main dome, there are four half-domes and small domes that continue along the four sides. Sixteen of the names of Allah (C.C.) on the inner surface of the dome were written together with the last two verses of Surah Hashr, dedicated to the sixteen Turkish states in history. There are attributions of God written on the squinches of four different sections under the dome of the work. The lines of “The one who meets the needs”, “The one who answers the prayers”, “The one that hears the voices”, “Please accept our prayers” are written in Arabic calligraphy made of stainless steel, produced with nanotechnology. The entire 220-meter-long Surah Al-Fath, which was also produced with nanotechnology, was placed on the arches under the dome. The surah consists of nine thousand parts. The height of the pulpit is 21 meters. It is possible to go up to the pulpit by elevator when necessary. The sermon platform of the mosque, which was produced with the meticulous work of the mother-of-pearls, has a height of approximately 4 meters. The main gate of the work is also quite remarkable. With a weight of 6 tons, a height of 6.5 meters and a width of 5 meters, it is one of the largest doors in the world of any mosque or temple. The mosque has a total of six minarets, two with two minaret balconies and four with three minaret balconies. One can see some of the symbolic features of the mosque on the minarets. Two of the six minarets of the mosque were built at 90 meters, while the other four minarets were built at a height of 107.1 meters to symbolize the Manzikert Victory. |

Eser, Mimar Sinan’a 1566 yılında yaptırılmıştır.
Allah her şeyi hakkıyla bilmektedir”
Büyük kemerlerin içine çok sayıda pencere yerleştirilmiştir. Camide toplam iki yüz dört pencere bulunmaktadır, bu sebeple cami oldukça aydınlıktır. Mihrâb, Sinan çağının en güzel örneklerindendir.
Mihrâbda beyaz mermer kullanılmıştır, altın yaldızlı sekiz sıra sarkıtlıdır.
Eserin avlusunda altıgen bir şadırvan bulunmaktadır. Avlunun ortasında yer alan saçaklı mermer havuzlu bu şadırvan on altı sütuna dayanmaktadır.
This is the second mosque built by Mihrimah Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, with her name on the mosque. It is located in Edirnekapı of Fatih district.
The work was built by Mimar Sinan in 1566.
In addition to the mosque, there was a madrasah, a primary school, a bath, a bazaar, a fountain and tombs in the complex.
The mosque has a monumental dome with a height of 37 meters and a diameter of 20.25 meters. The dome is carried by four arches and weight towers. It is seen that the massive arches of the work are supported by the red granite columns (four) on the sides and the three-arched galleries located between the wall buttresses on the north-south fronts. The number of the windows on the ring of the dome is twenty-four. In the centre of the dome, it is seen that the 35th verse from the Surah Nur, which is also found in many historical mosques, is engraved in jail thuluth calligraphy: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. Allah guideth unto His light whom
He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things.”
Many windows are placed inside the great arches. There are two hundred and four windows in the entire mosque which makes the mosque quite bright. The niche is one of the most beautiful examples of the age of Mimar Sinan. White marble was used in the niche, with eight rows of gilded pendants.
There is a hexagonal fountain in the courtyard of the mosque. This fountain which has a marble pool is located in the middle of the courtyard and rests on sixteen pillars. The courtyard is surrounded by madrasa chambers with porticoes on three sides.
As mentioned above, the Great Master Architect Sinan built two mosques in the name of Mihrimah Sultan. One of the mosques is located on the Üsküdar coast (See page 430), and the other is located on the Edirnekapı ridge. Mihrimah Sultan left the choice of the location of the mosque complexes to the will of the master architect. It is seen that the particular places that Mimar Sinan preferred to build mosques also have a symbolic meaning, befitting the architect’s mastery. In the spring, the sun (Persian Mihr) sets over the mosque built in Edirnekapı, while the moon (Persian Mah) rises between the two minarets of the mosque built in Üsküdar. It is rumored that the master architect achieved this through calculations to symbolize the name of Mihrimah Sultan, which means “Moon and Sun”.
The mosques built for the children and mothers of the Ottoman sultans were traditionally built with double minarets, but it is seen that a single minaret was built in this mosque instead.
The mosque is a masterpiece that stands out among the creative works of Mimar Sinan. To an extent that it will be the main source of inspiration for the illuminated single-domed mosques built in the 18th and the 19th centuries.

Ertuğrul Tekke Camii, Beşiktaş ilçesinde Yıldız semtinde bulunmaktadır.
Cami, Sultan II.
Abdülhamid’in elinden çıktığı bilinmektedir.
Ertuğrul Tekke Mosque is located in Yıldız neighborhood of Beşiktaş district.
The Mosque was built by Sultan Abdulhamid II in 1888 for Sheikh Hamza Zafir Efendi. It is known that Sheikh Hamza Zafir Efendi was one of the leading sheikhs of the Shadiliyya order. There are two reasons behind the given name of Ertugrul Tekke Mosque. The first is the Sultans desire to keep alive the precious memory of Ertuğrul Gazi, the ancestor of the Ottoman dynasty. The second is that the Sultan allocated the mosque for the worship of the Ertuğrul Regiment, which was formed from the Turkmens of the Domaniç region. With the closure of dervish lodges, tekkes and tombs, the structure was first transferred to the Municipality of Istanbul and then to the Ministry of National Education. After it served as Poet Nedim Primary School until 1957, it was reopened as a mosque in 1960.
The mosque has an octagonal plan. Eight wooden pillars carry the dome. The wooden dome is decorated with baroque and floral motif panels.
It is seen that the niche and the wooden pulpit next to it were produced with a very impressive craftsmanship. The niche and the pulpit and the choice of material is in full harmony with its design and decorations.
There is a wooden preacher's lectern decorated with acanthus leaves, a hanging garland, floral motifs and lozenges in an eclectic style in the mosque. This lectern was known to be a hand work of Sultan Abdülhamid II. It resembles the palace furniture with its beauty. Another interesting feature of the lectern is that it has been produced in such a way that it can rotate around itself according to need.
The structure is decorated with remarkable motifs such as flowers, bouquets, flowers coming out of vases, tasseled curtains that are in the fashion of the period, acanthus leaves, seashells, curved branches, and oil lamp motifs hanging down with their chains.
The Sheikh Zafir Tomb, which draws attention with its interesting dome that resembles the shape of an onion, is located in the northwest of the mosque.
The minaret, which has no organic connection with the main structure, has a single minaret balcony. The body of the minaret is in the form of an octagonal prism and is animated with moldings. The lower part of the minaret balcony is filled with a series of cantilevers and is lined with stone grids built in plique-a-jour technique.

Eyüp Sultan Camii
|
Eyüp Sultan Camii, Eyüpsultan ilçesinde Haliç’in kıyısına yakın bir konumda bulunmaktadır. İç avlu on iki sütun tarafından taşınan on üç kubbe ile çevrelenmektedir. |
Eyüp Sultan Mosque is located in Eyüpsultan district, close to the shore of the Golden Horn. Ebu Eyyub el-Ensari, who gave the name of the mosque and the district, is believed to have participated in the siege of Istanbul carried out by the Muslim armies during the caliphate of Yazid b. Muawiya and reached the rank of martyrdom during the siege. The tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari is considered to be located near the city walls. According to hearsay, during the conquest of Istanbul in 1453, seventy-seven guardians began to search for this tomb and Sheikh Akşemseddin, the teacher of the Conqueror Sultan Mehmed, discovered it. The Conqueror Sultan Mehmed had a tomb built on the place where the tomb is located. In 1459, he wanted a social complex to be built together with a mosque. With the burial of important people of the period over the years, the complex surrounded by cemeteries has become one of the important faith centers of our country. There was a madrasa, soup kitchen, a bath and a tomb in the complex. In the earthquake of 1766, the mosque was completely destroyed and was rebuilt by Sultan Selim III in 1800. The architect of the mosque was Mehmed Arif Ağa. The main dome with a diameter of 16 meters is surrounded by eight semi-domes and there are four smaller domes at the corners. There are twenty-four single row shams between the skirt patterns of the twenty-four sliced dome and the center patterns of the dome. In the center of the dome, the 35th verse of the Surah Nur is engraved in calligraphy: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things.” The inner courtyard is surrounded by thirteen domes supported by twelve pillars. The marble fountain with large pendants in the middle of the courtyard sits on eight pillars. There are two minaret balconies on each of the two minarets of the mosque. When we look at the Ottoman history, we see that Eyüp Sultan Mosque holds an extremely important place for the Ottoman political life and state protocols. The Ottoman sultans who ascended the throne used to gird their swords in this mosque. The sultan, who would ascend to the throne, would first come to the mosque and visit the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. One of the important scholars of the period would present one of the swords belonging to the Companions, which was among the relics in Topkapı Palace, to the sultan. The sultan, wearing the sword which presented to him symbolically, would go to Topkapı Palace after the ceremony and sit on the throne after the culus ceremony held there. The new sultan would arrive at Eyup by the sea, and after the sword-wielding ceremony, he would return to Topkapı Palace by following the Divânyolu route via Edirnekapı. It is mentioned in historical documents that the first sultan to wield a sword in Eyüp Sultan Mosque was the Conqueror Sultan Mehmed. The sword was presented by the sultan’s mentor, Sheikh Akşemseddin, and this tradition was continued until the last Ottoman sultan, Sultan Vahdettin. |

Fatih Camii
|
Fatih Mosque gives its own name to the district it is located in, the district of Fatih. The work was built by the great ruler Fatih Sultan Mehmed (The Conqueror Sultan Mehmed) in 1470 by the Architect Atik Sinan. After the mosque was damaged in the earthquake of 1766, the work was commissioned by Sultan Mustafa III to be restored by the Architect Mehmed Tahir Aga in 1771. In the Fatih Complex, which was built on an area of 120,000 square meters, there were sixteen madrasas, shelters for the poor, hospitals, libraries, soup kitchens, baths, bazaars and tombs in addition to the mosque. The main dome of the work is carried by four massive pillars and is surrounded by four half-domes. The first six verses of the surah Taha of Quran are engraved in the middle of the main dome with a diameter of 16.8 meters (the diameter of the dome of the old mosque was 26 meters): “Tâ-hâ. We have not revealed the Quran to you (O Prophet) to cause you distress, but as a reminder to those in awe (of Allah). (It is) a revelation from the One Who created the earth and the high heavens, the Most Compassionate, (Who is) established on the Throne. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth and whatever is in between and whatever is undergrounds Tile decorations in the seven-domed narthex are from the first mosque period. Its calligraphy, on the other hand, is considered to be one of the first examples of the jali thuluth script used in the Ottoman period. Although it is reported that it was written by the famous calligrapher of the period, Yahya Sofi, this information is uncertain. The blessed Basmala was written on one of the tiles, and a section of Ayetü’l-kürsî prayer was written on the other. One can see that the color “yellow”, which is seen only in the 15th century tile decorations, is used on these plates. The outer courtyard gate of the mosque has survived from the first Mosque before the restoration. There is a crown part decorated with colored stones with inlay technique on this gate. Other elements that have survived from the first Fatih Mosque are the entrance wall of the work and the lectern, the bottom and the trunk sections of the two minarets that are adjacent to this wall at the corners. There is a sundial engraved in stone in the first lectern here. According to Süheyl Ünver, this sundial is an heirloom from the famous scholar Ali Kuşçu. The courtyard of the fountain is surrounded by eighteen pillars and twenty domes. The tomb of the Conquer Sultan Mehmed is also located in the garden of the mosque. The mosque has two minarets. The minarets were raised by Sultan Abdulhamid II and one more minaret balcony was added to each of the minarets. |

Hırka-i Şerif Camii, Fatih ilçesinde Muhtesip İskender Mahallesinde yer almaktadır.
Eser, Hz. Peygamberin (S.A.V.) Veysel Karanî’ye (Üveys el-Karanî) emanet edilmesini vasiyet ettiği bilinen hırkasının korunmasını ve ziyaret edilebilmesini sağlamak amacıyla Sultan I. Abdülmecid tarafından 1847-1851 yılları arasında yaptırılmıştır.
Günümüzdeki caminin inşasından daha önce Sultan I. Abdülhamid, 1780de caminin kuzeyinde, avlunun bitiminde yer alan küçük bir yapıyı, hırka-i şerifin ziyaretini kolaylaştırmak amacıyla inşa ettirmiştir.
Hırka-i Şerif Mosque is located in Muhtesip İskender Neighborhood of Fatih district.
It was built by Sultan Abdulmecid I between 1847-1851 in order to ensure that the blessed cardigan of the Prophet (Peace be upon Him), which is known to be entrusted to Veysel Karanî (Üveys al-Karani) by the Prophet, would be preserved and can be visited.
Before the construction of the present-day mosque, Sultan Abdulhamid I had a small structure built at the end of the courtyard, to the north of the mosque, in 1780 to facilitate the visit of the blessed cardigan.
The interior of the mosque, which has a very plain appearance when viewed from the outside, is quite magnificent. The decorations inside display the aesthetic and artistic taste of the Westernization period.
The mosque is covered with an octagonal dome with a diameter of 11.5 meters. On the dome, the 35th verse of Surah Nur is written in jali thuluth: "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is Knower of all things.” The surah was engraved on the skirt of the dome by the Calligrapher Kazasker Mustafa Izzet Efendi.
The niche and the pulpit display a synthesis of baroque and imperial styles. The Sultans pavilion is connected with the Sultans platform.
The mosque is illuminated by very large and wide windows.
It has two very elegant minarets with a single minaret balcony each.

Gazi Atik Ali Paşa Camii, Fatih ilçesinde, Çemberlitaş’ta yer almaktadır.
Sultan II.
Büyük kubbe dört fil ayağının üzerinde durmaktadır, eteğinde ise on altı pencere bulunmaktadır. Kubbenin merkezine Tevbe sûresinin 112. âyeti işlenmiştir: “O tövbekârlar, ibadet edenler, hamdedenler, dünyada yolcu gibi yaşayanlar, rükûa
varanlar, secde edenler, iyiliği teşvik edip kötülükten alıkoyanlar,
Allah'ın sınırlarını gözetenler; müjdele o müminleri!”
Cami içerisinde duvarda asılı celî sülüs hat ile yazılmış iki kitâbe vardır.
Bu kitâbelerin birinde “Vakti geçmeden önce namaza acele ediniz.”, diğerinde ise “Ölüm gelmeden önce tövbeye acele ediniz.” mealindeki hadîs-i şerifler yazmaktadır.
Cami giriş kapısının üstündeki küçük panoda yer alan Besmele-i Şerif ve altındaki büyük panoda yer alan Nisâ sûresinin 103. âyetinin son kısmı ise 1896 yılında gerçekleştirilen tadilatta Hattat Sâmi Efendinin kaleminden çıkmıştır.
Eserin tek şerefeli tek minâresi vardır.
Gazi Atik Ali Pasha Mosque is located in Çemberlitaş, Fatih district.
It was built during the period of Sultan Bayezid II by Atik Ali Pasha in 1496, who was the grand vizier during the Bayezid era. It is one of the oldest works of the city. Its architect is unknown.
It is a more developed example of architectural style of Bursa. It is made entirely of cut limestone. The main dome, which is 24 meters high and 12.5 meters in diameter, is supported from the outside by eight buttresses. The main dome is supported by four small domes and a half dome on the side of the niche. The large dome stands on four massive pillars, and there are sixteen windows on
its skirt. In the center of the dome, the 112th verse of the Surah At-Tawba of the Quran is engraved: “It is the believers who repent, who are devoted to worship, who praise their Lord, who fast, who bow down and prostrate themselves, who encourage good and forbid evil, and who observe the limits set by Allah. And give good news to the believers.”
There are two epitaphs written in jali thuluth calligraphy hanging on the wall inside the mosque. There are two traditions of the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) written on these epitaphs: In one of them “Hurry to prayer before the time is over”, and in the other, “Hurry to repentance before death comes.” are written.
The blessed Basmala on the small frame above the entrance door of the mosque and the last part of the 103rd verse of the Surah of Nisa on the large frame below were written by the Calligrapher Sami Efendi during the renovations carried out in 1896.
The mosque has a single minaret with a single minaret balcony.

Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa Camii, Fatih ilçesinde Davutpaşa semtinde bulunmaktadır.
Eseri Sadrazam Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa, Mimar Çuhadar Ömer Ağa ve Mimar Hacı Mustafa’ya 1735 yılında inşa ettirmiştir.
Külliye; cami, kütüphane, sebil, çeşme, tekke ve türbeden oluşmaktaydı.
Cami klasik Osmanlı mimarîsinin son eserlerinden biridir. Merkezî kubbe altı fil ayağına bağlı dört kemer üstüne oturtulmuştur. Ana kubbeyi beş yarım kubbe çevrelemektedir. Ana kubbenin merkezine İhlâs sûresi işlenmiştir: “De ki: O, Allah’tır, tektir. Allah sameddir.
Hekimoglu Ali Pasha Mosque is located in Davutpaşa district of Fatih.
It was built by the Architect Çuhadar Ömer Ağa and the Architect Hacı Mustafa with the request of the Grand Vizier Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha, in 1735.
The complex consisted of a mosque, a library, a public fountain, a drinking fountain, a dervish lodge and a tomb.
The mosque is one of the last works of classical Ottoman architecture. The central dome is seated on four arches attached to six massive pillars. Five half-domes surround the main dome. Surah
Ikhlas is engraved in the center of the main dome: “Say, He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah is
the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent” The 35th and 36th verses of Surah Nur of the Quran are engraved on the drum of the dome.
There are eclectic patterns performed with the shading technique on both the main dome and the half domes. The Kaaba is depicted on a tile plate on the right-side wall of the marble niche. The stonework of the marble pulpit is described as a marvel of art. The walls of the mosque are covered with beautiful tiles. The epitaphs belong to the Grand Vizier Ragıp Pasha.
The library on the courtyard entrance is used as the “Turkish-Islamic Art Library” today.
The tomb of Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha is also located in the garden of the mosque.
The mosque has a single minaret with a single minaret balcony.

Kadırga Sokullu Mehmed Paşa Camii Fatih ilçesinde Kadırga semtinde bulunmaktadır.
Eserin bânîsi, döneminin ünlü sadrazamı Sokullu Mehmed Paşadır. Paşa külliyeyi eşi, Sultan II. Selim’in kızı olan Esmehan Sultan için 1572 yılında Mimar Sinan’a inşa ettirmiştir.
10 cm olan parçalar İstanbul’a getirilmiştir.
Kadirga Sokullu Mehmed Pasha Mosque is located in the Kadırga district of Fatih.
The work was built by the famous grand vizier of his time, Sokullu Mehmed Pasha. The Pasha had this complex built for his wife Esmehan Sultan, the daughter of Sultan Selim IL It was built by Mimar Sinan in 1572.
The complex included the mosque, a madrasah, a dervish lodge, shops and fountains.
The dome skirts and the pulpit inside the mosque are decorated with tiles. The surrounding of the niche is also made of tiles. The height of the dome is 22.8 meters and its diameter is 13 meters, and the 41st verse of the surah of Fâtir is engraved in its center: “It is Allah Who sustains the heavens and the earth, lest they cease (to function): and if they should fail, there is none - not one - can sustain them thereafter: Verily He is Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.” There are half domes at the corners and six weight domes on its roof.
The elegant qibla wall of the mosque displays an extensive collection of epitaphs written on marble, tiles and colored glass.
One of the important features that makes the work interesting is that this is the only mosque where pieces of the Black Stone which came from the Kaaba are present here. During the renovation of the protective case of the Black Stone in Mecca, some pieces fell apart which were a total length of 10 centimeters and these pieces were brought to Istanbul. They were placed at different sections of the Sokullu Mehmed Pasha Mosque, which was under construction at that time. One can still see the pieces of the Black Stone today on the niche, on its gate, on the cone of the pulpit, and on the entrance gate.
Sokullu Mehmed Pasha Mosque exhibits the mastery of Mimar Sinan in lighting and sound. The windows of the work were used more intensively on the drum and on the side fronts. There are approximately ninety windows. For the acoustic system, cubes were placed inside the cavities built on the dome pulley. With this system, all of the sound inside the mosque is collected inside the dome and distributed in a balanced way.
The tomb of Sokullu Mehmed Pasha is in Eyüp Sultan, and the tomb of Esmehan Sultan, is in the Hagia Sophia Mosque with her father.
The mosque has a single minaret with a single minaret balcony.

Kara Ahmed Paşa Camii, Fatih ilçesinde bulunmaktadır. Sadrazam Kara Ahmed Paşa tarafından Mimar Sinan’a 1554 yılında yaptırılmaya başlanmıştır. Allah sameddir Doğurmamış ve doğmamıştır O’nun hiçbir dengi yoktur" Kubbeyi taşıyan kemerlerin arasına yerleştirilmiş yuvarlak levhalarda “Allah (C.C.)”, “Hazreti Muhammed (S.A.V.)”, “Hazreti Ebu Bekir”, “Hazreti Ömer”, “Hazreti Osman”, “Hazreti Ali” isimleri yazılıdır. Caminin mermer mihrâbının üzerinde, mimarının başka eserlerinde de kullanıldığı görülen Âl-i İmrân sûresinden bir âyet bulunmaktadır. Bu âyetin içerisinde üzerinde yer aldığı mimarî ögeyi hatırlatmak istercesine, “mihrâb” sözcüğü anılmaktadır: “[Hz.] Zekeriya, onun [Hz. İsa'nın annesi Meryem] yanına, mihrâba (mabede) her girişinde onun yanında bir rızık bulurdu..." Caminin zemin katında on dört pencere vardır. |
Kara Ahmed Pasha Mosque is located in Fatih district. It began to be built by Mimar Sinan in 1554 with the request of the Grand Vizier Kara Ahmed Pasha. After the death of Pasha, the complex was completed in 1572. In addition to the mosque, the complex consisted of a primary school, a madrasah, a soup a kitchen and a tomb. The central dome with a diameter of 12 meters is seated on six arches combined with pillars. There are four semi-domes around the central dome. Surah Ikhlas is engraved with a calligraphy in the center of the dome which is built on a drum of eighteen windows: “Say, He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah is the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent." The names “Allah (C.C.)”, “Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him)”, “Abu Bakr (R.A.)”, “Omar (R.A.)”, “Osman (R.A.)” and “Ali (R.A.)” are written on the round plates placed between the arches that carry the dome. On the marble niche of the mosque, there is a verse from the surah of Âl-i İmran, which is seen to be used in other works of the architect. As if to remind the architectural element on which this verse is located, the word “mihrab (niche)” is mentioned: “Whenever Zachariah visited her (Maryam R.A.) in the mihrab, he found her supplied with provisions." There are fourteen windows on the ground floor of the mosque. Their pediments are decorated with Iznik tiles and Surah Fatiha. Edirnekari pen works, especially on the ceilings of the structure, are among the best examples in our country. It is the last Sinan mosque to use tile coverings with abstract floral patterns and colors (yellow, green, blue, turquoise, white). The windows on both sides of the entrance gate of the mosque were kept larger than the gate. The courtyard, surrounded by domed porticoes, was built quite spacious. It is seen that the porticos were built with nine arches in the north and six arches in the east and west directions. The fountain, which is designed as a nonagon, is positioned in the middle of the courtyard, emphasizing the side gates of the courtyard and the axis of the niche. The tomb of the pasha is also located in the garden of the mosque. The work has a single minaret with a single minaret balcony. |

Kilic Ali Pasha Mosque is located in Tophane neighborhood of Beyoğlu district.
The mosque, which was built by Mimar Sinan with the request of the Algerian Uluç Ali Pasha, who was a captain between 1572 and 1587, was opened for worship in 1580.
Uluç Ali Pasha is of Italian origin, his name before his conversion to Islam was known as “Giovanni Dionigi Galen”. Pasha is referred to as “Occhiali” in the Italian archives.
Along with the mosque, the complex consists of a madrasa, a bath, a fountain and a tomb.
Mimar Sinan was inspired by the Hagia Sophia when he was building the mosque, but he built his own mosque in a smaller size, using the elements of Ottoman architecture, purifying it from the architectural flaws of Hagia Sophia.
Four massive pillars carry the dome with a diameter of 12.7 meters. The mosque is illuminated by one hundred and forty-seven windows along with twenty-four windows in the dome. In the middle of the main dome, which is combined with two half-domes, the chapter of Ikhlas is engraved: “Say, He is Allah, [who is] One. Allah is the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”
The jali thuluth calligraphy of the mosque belong to Demircikulu Yusuf Efendi. They are found in window pediments, carved stone plates and hand-drawn embroidery. The decorations on the ceiling of the platform for the call of the prayer are also magnificent implementations of the period.
The tomb of the pasha is located in the garden of the mosque.
The mosque has a single minaret balcony and a single minaret.
